I love the picture of the bee on the flower. It is a fine metaphor for partnership.

This was exactly what I needed to hear, thank you for bringing my attention to your work. Your blessing is the most beautiful and touching words I've read in a long time. These words will reside within, reminding me of the sacredness of all beings.

The divine in us, how is it defined?

Das Göttliche in uns, wie definiert sich das?

Expand full comment

Lieber Herr Herbek, I am using the term to refer to the Divine spark in us, which is like the first breath we take or our spiritual being. It also refers to the Christmas understanding of the eternal word which seeks do dwell in us.

... ich benutze den Begriff im Sinne von Gottes Atem in uns, was uns zu geistigen Geschöpfen macht. Aber auch im Sinne der Weihnacht, dass Gottes ewiges Wort in uns Wohnung sucht.

LG!

Last night as I left a prayer service honoringSt. Phoebe, I caught a glimpse of the moon and was stopped in my tracks! Magnificently large and bright and worthy of more than a glimpse, she glowed in selfless glory. I had to “behold” and speak gratitude.

I was drawn to Hildegard by her music, and then by her environmental writing, some 30 years ago. I taught her in a first-year seminar. Jim once walked in the woods near her conveconvent. But I didn't know she praised spelt!

Expand full comment

Oh, that is so nice to know, Donna. What else did you teach?

Yes, the spelt. That is indeed how I came to Hildegard googling for old bread recipes :-) She was very versed also in the healing sciences and what is called today "monastic medicine." Part of this medicine is prevention, dietary and a healthy life style. Thus she was praising spelt as part of it. It was the time when eating bread was actually healthy!
