Dear fellow traveler,
This morning I found myself walking out into in the morning sun. The backyard laid still grey and bare under the rays of new sun light. Last year’s leaves were strewn where the last wind storm has blown them.
I raked some leaves from the flower beds here and there, tenderly, curiously, like a child wondering what one can find beneath. Sure enough, little tiny greens with tender blue buds were stretching their heads into the morning sun.
Still, the unfolding of Spring takes its time. Much of it actually happens beneath the surface and away from our gaze. The juices bubbling in the trees creating buds just at the right time. The tender greens under last year’s fallen leaves waiting for the day to enfold their beauty and grow into the sun.
We often forget that like Spring, Lent is not a day but a season.
Thus as the coming of Spring invites us, sometimes tenderly, sometimes mightily, to take part of nature’s unfolding, the Lenten season invites us into the unfolding of renewed life when the old has died away. Graciously, tenderly, patiently.
So my midweek blessing today is a humble consolation for all who are waiting for Spring’s coming into our pained world:
If you (like me)
have been visited by
days of lament
this Lenten season
do not despair.Welcome them instead
like the young green
keeps growing under
layers of dead leaves.
Spring is on its way.
Peace and Blessings to you this Lenten season, Almut

Thanks Almut! I am thinking…maybe Spring is not a moment or even a season but an event—the reawakening of the Earth, the invigoration of ourselves, and renewal of the hope for “the restoration of all things” promised in the Resurrected One, Jesus Christ. Such an event happens now, yes, at this time of year in the Northern Hemisphere, but it could happen at any time, in any place. Wherever, whenever faith and hope and love become real to us. Blessings to you! Chris
